Frequently Asked Questions
-
Think2Switch™ is a non-invasive brain-computer interface (BCI) system that translates brain activity into actionable commands, enabling individuals to control devices using thought alone.
When paired with the Muse S Athena headset, the Think2Switch™ app allows users to make choices and trigger outputs using a detected brain signal instead of a tap or button press.
-
Think2Switch™ operates through a simple, guided process:
The user wears the Muse S Athena headset, a soft, non-invasive device with sensors positioned on the forehead and right above the ears.
The system is calibrated to distinguish between an “active command” and a resting state.
The app interprets these brain signals in real time.
These recognized signals are translated into commands that activate selected outputs.
For example, a trained active command can be used to turn on a light, make a selection, or control media—without physical interaction.
For more detailed guidance, please refer to the Think2Switch™ Knowledge Guide.
-
An active command is a consistent mental signal that triggers a selected output. It is the foundation of how Think2Switch™ functions.
During calibration, users are asked to think of a consistent command (such as a word, phrase, or imagined movement). Once trained, Think2Switch™ detects this signal and uses it to activate functions such as:
Communicating a word or phrase
Making a selection
Controlling devices or media
The command does NOT need to be a word. Any consistent internal thought can be used, provided it can be reproduced reliably.
Quick Guide for Calibration & What You Can Do With Think2Switch™
-
No. Think2Switch™ does not read or interpret your inner thoughts.
When you think, your brain generates electrical brain signals and this is what Think2Switch™ detects and interprets as your active command. It does not recognize specific words or ideas—only the unique brain activity pattern associated with a user’s command.
-
Think2Switch™ works differently for different users. We encourage you to try it risk-free with Muse Athena’s 30-day return guarantee and the free app trial. If you’re unsure whether it’s the right fit, our team is happy to chat before you buy.
-
To get started, you will need:
The Think2Switch™ app
The Muse S Athena headset
Optional integrations:
HomeKit Output: Control compatible smart devices (e.g., lights or appliances) using HomeKit-enabled smart plugs.
Keyboard Output: Send keyboard inputs to a connected computer or tablet to control applications, games, or media.
-
Think2Switch™ enables control of devices and applications that respond to simple on/off or input-based commands. See examples here:
-
Think2Switch™ can send keyboard-style inputs to other software and hardware, so it works with many apps and devices that accept a switch or keyboard input. We're actively expanding the range of supported devices and platforms, including Alexa, Android, and Google Home.
For specific integration questions, please contact our team. -
Initial setup and calibration typically take 5–10 minutes.
Learning to use Think2Switch™ is a personalized process. Some users respond quickly, while others benefit from shorter, repeated sessions over time. Progress varies by individual, and there is no fixed learning timeline.
-
Yes. Think2Switch™ grew out of academic brain-computer interface research at the University of Calgary, including the doctoral work of our co-founder and CEO, Dr. Dion Kelly. That research explored how people can control devices using their brain signals — the same approach Think2Switch uses today. Our goal is to make that technology easy for anyone to try at home!
